The details behind the Innegra designs
As a Surfboard Shaper i find the discussions people have regarding either Epoxy or Poly Surfboard manufacture a bit of a drag, the truth is you either like one or the other and that is all there is to it. If you want to make a big difference to a surfboards sustainability, feel and performance it’s not the resin that you should be concentrating on but the cloth, just like reinforced concrete you have different type of reinforcement for different construction well the same is true for any construction. Normal Surfboard construction is flawed due to the way the finished board is hard and brittle, don’t get me wrong i love riding poly surfboards i have done for years, but lets be honest poly and Epoxy boards built using traditional methods have been around a long time, there is a lot of new cloths around these day’s some of them like Innegra have the potential to change things in a big way!
Now Innegra i came across this cloth by chance, a friend of mine at East Coast Fibreglass gave me a sample as a test piece so i run up a few small squares of cloth glassing 60g Innegra under 4oz Aerialite fibreglass, i dropped it, hit it and flexed it and was amazed at how tough the Innegra was.
So i had to, i had to build a few Innegra Surfboards just out of pure curiosity and i was amazed at the results!
For starters the ride quality is amazing you really do get a smoother ride and a massively improved flex, i have jumped up and down on them, dropped them and hit them and i can not find any damage, mabe a few minor scratches, it’s been a few months now since i started riding my Innegra Bandit i go back to riding a poly surfboard every now and then but it’s just not as good, i am converted!
Innegra(tm) S fibers help to make high performance products tougher, lighter, and more impact resistant than ever before. Innegra has been incorporated into everything from Formula One race cars, to hockey sticks, tennis racquets, windsurf and SUP boards, kayaks, aircraft, police shields, ropes and more.
Innegra S is a high-performance olefin fiber that is lightweight, tough, durable, hydrophobic and recyclable. When high-modulus fibers are combined with Innegra S fiber, weight can be reduced, impact resistance and damage tolerance are vastly improved and electrical signal transmission management is fine-tuned expanding the performance of existing fiber technology.
